Student Project - Science (social) Featured
Project Name: Weed assessments at Queensland Urban Utilities sites Project date: To be agreed between the Student and Queensland Urban Utilities Duration of project: To be agreed between the Student and Queensland Urban Utilities Degree Targeted : Environmental Science, Botany, Agricultural Science Level of degree targeted:  Undergraduate Project area: Science (social) Project description: Queensland Urban Utilities operate a large number of facilities across South East Queensland, many on larger parcels of land and in regional areas. As part of managing our biosecurity risks, we need to understand what weeds exist on our sites, their classification and a risk profile for management. The intent of this project is to conduct weed surveys at specified sites with the following intended outcomes:  • the recording of location and type of weed by site; • classifying the types of weed in accordance with QLD legislation; • displaying the data in a format either suitable for transfer to GIS or in GIS format; • provide a report detailing high risk sites (based on weed classifications) and suitable management practices. This information will assist Queensland Urban Utilities in understanding the location and types of weeds harboured on our sites and their classification to enable targeted management practices to take place.   This is a large project that may be split over multiple consecutive students. Students can download a free app for undertaking weed surveys called Avenza maps.
